And the hottest scienceblogger is...

... at the end of the post. But first a disclaimer: to be included you had to (a) have a 'working science' blog indexed by Postgenomic, (b) have claimed your blog on Technorati and (c) have uploaded a portrait there. That's why the set of bloggers represented is relatively small.

Anyway, the results:

It's looking pretty bad for male sciencebloggers. People prefer the monkeys.

 NumberAverage Hotness
Women489.25
Primates (inc. those stuffed or crudely anthromorphised)368
Other non-human portraits2153.38
Men3747.02

If you want some context, know that the 'skulls and skeletons' subcategory of 'other non-human portraits' has an average hotness of 56.

Is it a clean shaven thing? Chicks don't dig beards.

 NumberAverage Hotness
Beardy Men1239.58
Non-Beardy Men2552.76

PZ Myers is a beardy exception, with a respectable hotness of 80.

I thought that it might be interesting to see how different types of scientist compare. Apparently climate change and medicine is hot, biotech is not.

 NumberAverage Hotness
Earth and Environment565.80
Neuroscience964.4
Clinical Practice & Research462.25
Science and Society758.70
Physics755.15
Bioinformatics855.12
Natural History354.33
Life Sciences2354.34
Biotechnology436.00

And now what you've really come here for: who are the five hottest sciencebloggers on the planet (whose blogs are indexed by Postgenomic and claimed on Technorati by a user with a portrait which isn't of a stuffed monkey, a moose or a pair of underpants)?

1. Retrospectacle

2. Chaotic Utopia

3. The Scientific Activist

4. Pharyngula

5. Notes from the Biomass

OK, so, as much as the scientist in me wants to question the methodology... I think I'm just going to have to let this one slide....

Nick work, guys! Keep it up!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and put forth the idea that the women scored higher in hotness largely because a predominantly male readership doesn't tend to find other males hot. I don't know, I could be wrong, you guys could have accounted for gender when collecting the information, but if you haven't, do you think you could accurately determine the male/female distribution based on the results?

So, when do we get the hottest philosophy of science blogger list?

Yes, yes, that's right, Brian. I demand a recount!

#4??!? Jebus. This just goes to show that fans of scienceblogs have no taste.

Also, my photo was very fuzzy. That was in my favor.

The methodology was so dirty that it pained me (I also got into trouble from my wife for including people's portraits without their permission - if anybody was offended then I sincerely apologise).

As regards the results - at the end of the day I didn't do anything fancy to the data (short of only allowing one vote per portrat per visitor). The people on the top 5 list got the most clicks - you can interpret that however you like. :)

John, forget about it. Lindsay is by training a philosopher of science.

Anybody who said that PZ was hot clearly did not see his entry where he posted a picture of is BREAST. Yikes a rikes, my eyes are still bleeding from that traumatic event.

Hey! That picture probably won me a lot of votes! Stew should do an IP trace, there were probably mobs of, umm, 'people' voting from lost R'Lyeh and Innsmouth and Arkham.
