Dang, I'm moving

Salaries in the field vary widely depending on education level and experience. Hughey says that annual salaries can range from $60,000 at the entry level to more than $100,000 for Ph.D.s. A recent salary survey [..] reported that the average salary in 2003 for life scientists whose primary area of specialization is bioinformatics was $75,845.

Entry level salaries of $60,000 (~ £35,000) for bioinformaticians? I'm definitely in the wrong country. Entry level here in the UK would be about two thirds of that and you'd be lucky to push $100,000 a year with a PhD as a team leader.

I always thought if I went back to school (when hell freezes over), I'd get either a degree in bioinformatics or genetic counseling. I'm surprised that it doesn't pay more, actually, considering the dirth of qualified people.

Here in México the base salary for an entry level bioinformatician is ~ $10,000 (sometimes having a Ph.D. as a requirement).

Team leaders may double that salary depending on their research field and publication possibilities (and some bureaucracy, of course).

Sometimes it becomes better to leave academic research and do some consultancy. You get better paid and have freedom of movement.

If you think you're in the wrong country, where am I supposed to be?

Regards.

PS. The blog is getting better every day, keep the nice work.
